Planning a Successful Move

December 23, 2013 | Moving Guides & Tips

Although you may not be moving tomorrow, it never hurts to get a head start on planning. Bekins recommends starting the moving process at least four weeks in advance of your desired move date. Plan a move and relocate by following these tips:

This is a great time to get organized for the move. Begin the process of sorting through items in your house. Decide what you’re going to keep and what you’d like to donate or sell. This will help you control your move cost.

Begin researching moving companies. Decide what services you will need based on your move. Not sure how to find the right moving company? Visit Bekins’ Web site for a list of resources  to consider when hiring a moving company.

Tend to details such as transferring the kids to a new school, collecting doctor’s records and sorting through related information. You will not want to have to worry about such factors as the move date approaches.

This is a great time to begin using perishable food items that will go to waste when you move since they can’t go on the moving truck. If you’re not able to use the food, consider donating it to a local food pantry through Move For Hunger , an organization that works with moving companies to assist in donating food to those in need.

Take time to consider your new home. Will your current furniture fit appropriately in the new space? Get a jump start on decorating ideas for the new home. Check out our Pinterest  page for possible ideas. Take time to focus on the exciting aspects of relocating to a new place!

Consider the supplies that you’ll need for the move and start gathering them. You want to feel as prepared as possible. Taking care of such details will ease the stress of the actual moving day.

You should feel prepared and much more relaxed with many details worked out in advance. Verify the small details of your move and handle the paperwork with the moving company.  You are well on your way to a successful move by properly preparing!
