August 2, 2019 | Household Moves, Moving Guides & Tips

So you’ve decided to take the next step in your relationship. You’re moving in together. What can be a very exciting time for you both can easily be walked into without proper preparation. Being blinded by excitement can have an effect on your future and if you’ve never lived with a significant other before, do you really know what to expect? Here are a few pieces of knowledge that many cohabitating couples can surely agree to.

You Will have Arguments, and that’s Okay

Having little fights is normal for anyone living together. Think of your parents or your first roommate. You can’t say that there weren’t times that you got on each other’s nerves because the trash wasn’t taken out or the TV was too loud while you were trying to sleep. But you got over it, right? If you make the decision to move in with your partner, you are also making the decision to accept them as they are. Moving in together shows that you’re taking the next step in your relationship. Don’t let the toilet seat being left up ruin the good thing you have going.

Decorating Together is a Wise Idea

No matter what either of you feel, you should always go together to buy pieces of furniture. If you aren’t together when you’re purchasing décor, at least send a picture. After all, you are going to have to look at those things every day. Not only should you like what you see, but also, those items are a reminder of what you’ve done together. This is your shared space and you should collaborate on it. Make it fun and meaningful.

Budgeting Goes a Long Way

One of the greatest perks of moving in together can be saving money. While this is great overall, just make sure you know where each other stands. Be open and communicative about finances and who will be taking care of what. Getting that out of the way first can avoid a headache in the future. Though you may still choose to keep your finances separate, and whether purchasing or renting a home, you should consider price-point, utilities, and other financial obligations as a couple.  After all, you are under the same roof now.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything Together

From here on out, your only truly private time will be in the bathroom. Think about that for a moment. Every room in your home is a shared space. Making time for your self is so important in any relationship. If you need to take some of that time, don’t be afraid to tell your partner. Even if that time is spent out of the house, they should understand and even want some of that too. It doesn’t mean that you love each other any less.

Communication is Your Best Bet at Success

In any relationship, one of the healthiest practices is to be open and to be able to talk with one another in confidence. This is even more important when living together because you cannot physically escape an issue that might arise. From little things like how your day went, to huge things like marriage and children, talk about it all! When you get used to talking to each other on a daily basis and about everything under the sun, problems won’t fester and build up inside of you.
