June 29, 2020 | Household Moves, Packing Guides & Tips

Packing for a move is the perfect time to sort, clean and start fresh. You can move with less by sorting through old boxes, downsizing furniture or even renting a storage unit. Minimalist moving doesn’t have to mean all or nothing—it’s all about doing your best to declutter.

Whether you’re moving into a smaller space or you’re just looking to lighten your load, downsizing while you pack is a great way to clear out unnecessary items. Follow our minimalist moving tips and tricks to start your life in your new home with less of a mess!

What is minimalist moving?

Minimalism is the notion that you can live well and thrive with less. Minimalist moving, therefore, is moving with less or moving with just the essentials—it’s downsizing before or during the packing process. Minimalist moving can make your move easier because, well, you’ll have less to transport from point A to point B. Plus, it’s a great way to start fresh in your new home!

How do I downsize while I pack?

Start by downsizing the “big stuff.”

This is especially important if you are downsizing homes. If you are moving from a house with 2 bedrooms, to an apartment with one, for example, think about ditching the extra bed, nightstand and dresser.

Figure out your storage plan.

Before you make a decision about what to keep and what to get rid of, decide what your plan is for storage. If you’re going to have a self-storage unit available, set aside items that will go in storage. It can be tough in the moment to decide what to get rid of; it might be a good idea to put the belongings you are unsure of in storage temporarily.

Sort through every box, bag and container.

There’s a good chance you have boxes in the basement or bags in closets that you haven’t looked through in a while. There’s also a good chance that you no longer need those items. While you’re packing for your move, take the time to go through everything and then get rid of the items that you no longer want or need.

Decide on what constitutes as clutter… and what doesn’t.

Of course, necessary items like utensils, chairs, shelves and lamps do not count as clutter. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used something in more than 6 months, you’re probably safe to get rid of it. Clothes that no longer fit you, items tucked away in storage… now is the perfect time to get rid of them.

Remember that you don’t have to be perfect.

It’s important to keep in mind that when you’re going for a minimalist move, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Just do your best to reduce the clutter. A little bit at a time makes a huge difference.

Once you’re done sorting, cleaning, decluttering and downsizing, it’s time to move! There’s a good chance that even after getting rid of some of your stuff, you’ll still need help moving. Get in touch with the professionals at Bekins to get your belongings to your new home stress-free.
