How to House Hunt Safely During the COVID-19 Pandemic

September 18, 2020 | Household Moves, Moving Guides & Tips

Are you on the search for your dream home during the COVID-19 pandemic? From taking virtual home tours to wearing a mask to packing hand sanitizer with you while you house hunt, there are several things you can do to limit the spread of the virus.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the real estate industry immensely. Even with things seeming to slowly return to normal as businesses reopen, the process of looking for a home has shifted. Going to open houses, having moving companies in your house in order to get an estimate, and meeting with your real estate agent in person don’t sound appealing in the current climate. That’s why the experts at Bekins have put together some tips on house-hunting safely during the COVID-19 outbreak.

How to safely house hunt during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Tip #1: Go virtual when possible.

Opting to “go virtual” will help limit the spread of germs. Plus, you’ll save time on the commute! When you’re looking for a new house, there are several things you can do virtually along the way, including:

  • Virtual tours are relatively common. From photos to video to virtual reality, there are several ways to virtually tour a home.
  • Mortgage pre-approval. A few lenders were already offering digital options for mortgage approval before the pandemic—now it’s even more common.
  • The appraisal process. Many loans are offering exterior or “drive-by” appraisals along with virtual options.
  • Moving survey. When you’re ready to move, the experts at Bekins can provide you with an estimate via one of our virtual survey options.

Tip #2: Wear a mask.

There’s a good chance that wearing a mask feels second nature to you at this point. If you do decide to go tour a house in person, make sure you continue to mask up!

Tip #3: Sanitize your hands.

Wash your hands before and after you tour a house, and bring sanitizer with you while you house hunt.

Tip #4: Be flexible with your schedule.

In order to practice social distancing, showings will most likely be spread out. You may not be able to tour the home at the exact time you want. If possible, be open with your schedule and patient when it comes to touring a house.

Tip #5: Check in with your finances.

Obviously, money does not prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, it’s important to ensure you have a little cushion when moving into a new home, especially during a global pandemic; we are in tough times economically. Has your employment situation been impacted by the virus? Are you unsure about the future of your company or career? Unfortunately, it’s probably not the right time to buy. On the other hand, if your job and industry are secure and you have savings set aside for a down payment and closing costs, you are most likely ready to buy.
