Moving After Retirement: Pros and Cons

April 10, 2020 | Household Moves

Retirement is the ultimate goal of anyone in the full-time workforce. You get to kick back and enjoy the fruits of your life’s labors. You can sleep in, spend time with your family, travel, watch 16-hour Forensic Files marathons–or do whatever else you want.

That includes packing up and moving somewhere brand new like a big city or a rural country town. This might seem like a scary prospect to some folks, but it’s an exciting and viable option to many others. If you’re not sure if a big retirement move is the right thing for you, that’s okay! We’ll walk through the pros and cons of making the choice so you can decide.

What are the pros of moving after retirement?

There are plenty of obvious advantages to moving after retirement. Some of the most significant ones include:

  • If you’re of retirement age, there’s a high likelihood that you’ve had children. Those children once had bedrooms but have since moved on to their own apartments and homes. Consequently, you probably have more room than you need. Retirement gives you the chance to downsize your home and relocate to a city that’s cheaper to live in. Many people enjoy traveling during retirement, so saving money on their other living costs can be a huge benefit.
  • You can move closer to your family. Our kids and loved ones don’t always stay in the same city where they were born. If you’ve lived far away from your family up until now, this is a great time to consider closing that distance. You get the excitement of a new city with the comfort of your loved ones close by.

What are the cons of moving after retirement?

Just like there are pros, there are cons. Some of the less ideal factors of moving after retirement include:

  • Having to transfer important things like health insurance. Moving to a different state or country means having to update and adapt to a lot of different details. One of these is your health insurance. When you’re of retirement age, there’s a higher likelihood of complex health problems. You must make sure your health is covered the way you want it to be, no matter where you go.
  • The heartache of leaving a place you’ve known your whole life. Moving is exciting, sure, but it’s also a big change. If you’ve lived in a single place for most of your life, the shock of a new city might be more than you signed up for. The heartache of being away from familiar spaces, places, and faces can be an unbearable con for some individuals.

How do I make the choice?

The pros and cons are comparable. You’ll have to decide which is more significant to you. If you’d rather have freedom or familiarity; If you’d prefer sticking close to family or striking out to see the world. It’s your choice. That’s the cool part about retirement: you get to make all the decisions you haven’t had time to consider for years.

Retirement is a time in your life to make the choices you always wanted to but didn’t have time for. If your next big choice includes moving somewhere new, good for you! Maybe you want to go somewhere sunnier, calmer or more exciting.
