What Goes Into a Moving Estimate?

May 8, 2020 | Moving Guides & Tips

Hiring a professional mover can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Additions like specialty moving and packing can add to the cost. Don’t be surprised by the cost of moving; get an estimate before signing any contracts.

No move is the same. Some are across town or across borders. Some are across oceans. That’s why it’s important to get a quote for your personal situation.

What is a moving estimate?

There are two main varieties of moving estimates. They are:

  • Binding estimates. With this estimate, once you contract with the moving company they’ll be unable to change the price they quoted you. As long as you only move the things listed on your inventory sheet, you won’t have any surprises.
  • Non-binding estimate. A non-binding estimate is what you’ll get after a quick consultation and is much more casual than a binding estimate. You’ll receive a best guess by the movers as to what your move will cost. The final price is not determined because the details have not yet been covered. This is helpful for those at the very beginning stages of moving. A non-binding estimate is a good jumping-off point for the rest of your planning.

What do moving estimates usually contain?

A moving estimate is going to include a professional moving company’s estimate of what it will cost to accomplish your desired move. There are multiple factors that will determine this number, including:

  • Size of your home. The estimate will include the square footage of your home and number of bedrooms.
  • Your furniture. The amount, size and shape will be considered.
  • Total weight of items you’ll be moving.
  • Distance you’ll be moving. A cross-country or international move will cost more than a move across the street.
  • Difficulty “level” of your home. A home with three floors, narrow doorways and winding staircases will cost more than a single level home with easy access.
  • Time of year you’re moving. Hiring professional movers costs more in the summer because they are in higher demand.
  • Custom requests. If you’ve asked for help moving a piano or assistance with packing, the cost of these additional services will be considered in the estimate.

Don’t let moving quotes confuse you. The best way to tackle them is by doing some preparatory research—which you just did. Great work! The next step? Working with a company that always provides easy-to-understand estimates. Give Bekins call today for an estimate without hidden fees or surprises!
